damus compacts its database so that it uses less space on your phone. Takes some time. You can deactivate it in the storage settings.

It's Damus compacting its local database to reclaim space, usually triggered when your phone is low on storage. Two fixes: free up some disk space, or turn off the auto compaction in the storage settings. Expect the spinner to run a while on big databases either way.
