☢️ Bottle Caps to Bitcoin: The Economics of the End of the World ☢️In a crumbling world, money stops being a government decree and returns to being a ledger of scarcity. Whether it’s the wasteland of Fallout, the trenches of WWII, or the digital frontier, the "Hardest" money always wins.
The "Liquid Asset" Trap 💧
In Fallout, the Nuka-Cola bottle cap is the Layer 2 solution. While clean water is the underlying value (the Water Standard), water itself is a terrible currency. It’s heavy, difficult to divide, and a liquid asset taken too literally. A struggle to carry 50 gallons to buy a rifle. The Cap is a physical token that represents a claim on that water. It’s "fossilised Proof of Work", scarcity guaranteed because the factories that made them are dead.
The Cost of Easy Money 🐚
As Saifedean Ammous outlines in The Bitcoin Standard, when you use easy money, you lose your soul to whoever owns the printing press.
Glass Beads & Shells: European explorers decimated local economies by flooding them with mass-produced beads.
Fiat Paper: Modern central banks can "mint" trillions with a keystroke, diluting your life’s energy.
The Rule: If the "Flow" (new supply) can easily overwhelm the "Stock" (existing supply), your wealth is an illusion.
Dystopian Realities & Survival Standards ⛓️
History shows us that when the system fails, humans default to assets that cannot be inflated:
The Bullet Standard (Metro 2033): Pre-war military-grade rounds are the currency. It’s a deflationary nightmare. Every time you pull the trigger to save your life, you are literally "burning" your net worth.
The Mackerel/Cigarette Standard: In prisons or POW camps, cigs and macks (mackerel pouches) become the Bitcoin of the barracks. They are portable, standardised, and have a natural burn rate that prevents hyperinflation.
The Hard Money Hierarchy
The common thread between Bitcoin, Gold, and Bottle Caps is the Stock-to-Flow ratio.
+ Gold is hard because of chemistry (geological scarcity).
+ Bitcoin is hard because of mathematics (21 million cap).
+ Bottle Caps are hard because of industrial decay (non-repeatable manufacturing).
⚡ The TL;DR for the Wasteland:
If less than 1% of Earth’s water is drinkable, our future money won’t be paper. It will be the "hardest" asset available.
We move from Digital Scarcity (Bitcoin) > Physical Scarcity (Gold) > Utility Scarcity (Caps/Bullets). Money isn't what the government says it is.
Money is the most tradable thing that is the hardest to create more of.
Stack sats.
Save caps.
Don't trust the printers.
