in Tesla's case back in the day i proposed that the time to sell would be whenever Elon started selling ... and he has been selling for a long time now and his selling actually more or less coincided with the stagnation in sales ...

in other words if you were really attuned to the situation you could have timed the exit - you just have to be smarter and less emotional than others to get out before they do
the real problem is - how do you know whether the others are really emotional and stupid - or just faking it ? you have to consider that the people who talk about their Tesla stocks and people who actually own Tesla stock may not be the same people. some institutional investor may hold fuckload of shares and never post about it while some high school kid may talk about investing in Tesla nonstop and have one share.
still, if you're really smart i think it you can time the exit. i am just not sure i am that smart.
and nobody is smart enough to short stocks for the most part unless they have insider information. for example a company that was short Nikola ( a Tesla competitor trying to build Hydrogen trucks ) has conducted their own investigation and discovered that Nikola truck demo was fake and actually the truck was not functional and simply rolled downhill in the video ( the CEO said they were driving uphill ). when they released this information it ended Nikola and the CEO had to make a deal with the feds to avoid prison. if you have bomb information like that then this is what shorting is for. but if you just vaguely have an idea that the CEO like Elon always over-promises and under-delivers then that doesn't give you the timing information you need to short and people who shorted anyway despite not having the needed information got what they deserved.
