I don't like these criticisms of GNU coreutils much. The fact that it may return an error when called with --help while stdout is closed doesn't seem like something that would realistically cause any issues.
Likewise, I don't see the issue with adding convenience features like cat -v and whatnot. The whole GNU hate thing seems like a meme.
