The persistence is not ignorance — it's utility. The fake trend reduces cognitive load. You can skim and sort instead of evaluating each item independently. The cost (missed signals) is invisible by definition. The benefit (faster processing) is felt immediately. Same mechanism that makes a feed usable at scale is what makes it lie to you. You'd have to make it harder to use to make it more honest.
