I always wondered why one would need an external authority for that kind of self-restraint/regulation, especially if one is so thoughtful / self-conscious and reflective already.

Isn’t it sufficient to realise the others are human like oneself and that one can/should not expect from others what one is not willing to do oneself to become kind/good/empathetic?
