When my father passed away I was hit by so many emotions that I couldn't handle and I just wanted to know one thing: Does it get better?
So from my experience I can tell you: Yes it does. Not because you don't love them or don't miss them anymore. It's because you do love them and you will ALWAYS miss them. After the shock of the goodbye fades, you start wanting to honor them one way or another and I think that's what makes it better. Because they keep living through you.
