Have you seen lineage os? Doesn't need play services. Works on a ton of devices. Thats what I use on my Sony. Not sure what the shortcomings are vs. Graphene.

Google can be added onto lineage. I assumed Google play services was the main thing that made an android more private or secure. What else about graphene makes it more secure over stock?
