One (hypothetical?) example could be a camera which encrypt the raw images with the camera's serial number, or if the camera vendors own software application program pulls the camera's calibration data from the company's web server.
So my advice (= from the volunteer digital archivist at datamuseum.dk)
Focus on the "self-contained" aspect: Does your digital artifact actually contain all the information required ?
