Handguns got banned in 97 that's true. But even then you could only own them for target practice.
Long guns and semi- automatics got banned in 86 after Hungerford. Again only used for target shooting...
as far as McUSSA goes, U.S. citizens, you are correct, have all sorts of restrictions, including outright bans on "firearms" which is a term of statutory law that does not apply to State Citizens, those retaining their constitutional Right to Bear Arms fully unvarnished.
