Recruit training barracks are hotbeds of communicable diseases. Very close quarters with people from all over, extreme stress, chronically short of sleep. I spent most of basic training with acute bronchitis, eventually getting hospitalized for two days. Pink eye was running rampant. You could barely hear some of the classes for all of the coughing.
