I don't mind arbitrary data if it's constrained (e.g. hashes that fit in 80 bytes), but i will always support closing the door to it where possible.
You know the UTXO set better than I do, but my understanding is that once data ends up in an unspendable UTXO or dust output, it's basically a one-time source of bloat that's stuck there. By comparison, allowing every transaction to carry large amounts of arbitrary data seems like it has a much bigger long-term footprint. So it feels a bit like straining at a gnat while there are larger issues.
As for Kratter, I only consume his free content. My impression is that his style probably costs him sponsorships and broader appeal, so I don't automatically view subscriptions as evidence he's grifting. It seems more like a small-donor model where people who find his work valuable choose to support it.
He definitely goes hard after Saylor. I used to think those criticisms were unfair or off-base, but over time I've become less certain. It's possible Kratter had some perspective or information that wasn't obvious to outside observers.
