They are the one home invader where I'll use an industry product, Terro. Not the traps, but a bottle where you put a ~1cm diameter drop on a cardboard square provided by the packaging. People claim that it's just borax and corn syrup, but I tried that and had virtually no results.
For flies, the ultimate tool is a Bug-A-Salt, especially the version with a laser sight. Fun, and effective.
