-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

The façade of Basilica di Santa Croce in Lecce is one of the most elaborate Baroque façades in southern Italy and a defining statement of Leccese Baroque.

It was completed mainly in the first half of the 17th century, with the upper section finalized under Giuseppe Zimbalo.

Architecturally, the façade is organized in two horizontal registers.

• The lower level is relatively ordered, structured by engaged columns and niches containing statues of saints, establishing a classical framework.

• The upper level becomes dramatically more expressive, culminating in a vast rose window (early 17th century), richly framed with vegetal and figurative carving.

A distinctive feature is the balustrade supported by sculpted figures and animals—including lions, griffins, dragons, and grotesque creatures.
