#NZPOL is Opportunity the new Act?
In the first election in which I was old enough to vote, I was a young, idealist Christian and voted New Zealand first.
In the following two elections, becoming increasingly disenfrancised with either left or right, I voted Opportunity.
I’m a centrist voter. I’m also a Māori and would never vote for Act.
Earlier this year, after Opportunity introduced Quilae to their mailing list, and she invited supporters to send her emails, promising she would read them: I sent her an email which involved the question of how Opportunity was going to really engage with right wing voters and avoid splitting the left only. She never responded.
Are they a new Act? They are definitely going after the position Act has now. That of a small, king maker party that can have an outsized influence. I’ve called Act a tail wagging a dog. I wouldn’t want Opportunity to wag the dog either, if Opportunity posed their citezen’s allowance or their decriminalisation of drug posession, and the majority of NZers were against it, I wouldn’t want to force it on the country. However, being centrist and not far right, I wonder if their policies will be less universally disliked by everyone who wasn’t a supporter.
I’ve said to my husband today, if it’s looking close on election day, I will probably vote Green. I love living on this planet, and I trust them more to care for it than, well, the right block. However, if it’s looking likely a win for the left block, I would vote opportunity because I want to see what our nation would really make of their ideas.
Does this mean Op is stealing green voters? Probably, but am I a green voter? I’ve never party voted Green before.
