The whole reason for the civil war was economic. The north kept pushing economic policies that benefitted the North's industrializing economy at the cost of the south's agrarian economy.

Lincoln freed the Slaves in the SOUTH ONLY to Demoralize the south. He did not free slaves in northern states. Sure, the abolitionists liked it because it was paper that freed slaves... But its purpose was not about ending slavery.

Freeing slaves only became a tool for Lincoln to use in order to cause the South to lose their work force and create chaos. But to be honest, he didn't control the south when he issued it because they had their own government and leadership by then... So slaves started escaping to the north. This was an economic attack, not a gesture of good will or a moral choice. This was total war... People don't talk about it, but people should read up on Sherman's March to the Sea...
