On 8 June, the EU activated its new freedom of navigation regime to impose sanctions on Iranian individuals and an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unit for exercising control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The measures target the IRGC’s Hormozgan Provincial Command, Deputy Commander for Political Affairs Mohammad Akbarzadeh, and Hamid Hosseini of the oil exporters union.
