The way I know I'm in a federated system is that when mastodon.social goes down, I don't really notice (maybe spammed slightly less)
@nprofile1q... when bluesky is down I learn about it from posts on mastodon and when mastodon is down I learn about it also from posts on mastodon because mastodon still works if some part of it breaks.
