3 years later the “very significant fee revenue” as Peter Toad put it, turned out to be… wait until you hear it… 0.75% of the total mining revenue. 0.75%!!! Meanwhile spam takes 36% of the blockspace on average and 39% of the size of UTXO set. Nearly 40% at the expense of the network for less than 1% revenue. This - to put it mildly - is simply outrageous.
