Other than Poland, Portugal is the only economy in the EU under considerable growth for the last 5-10 years and soon to be a net contributor while Germany is moving towards net benefactor territory.

It isn't just exploitation with Euro but also thanks to EU regulamentation and rules made by burocrats (yes corrupt) that do not take in consideration States sovereignty and or interests.
