Has anyone ever done a vnc rescue session on mynymbox before? It asks for a rescue login and password. I don't know what those are or where I would find them. I have never been asked to make them. Is ...

I don't know mynymbox's panel specifically, but on most VPS hosts the "rescue login/password" is not your server's root password. It's a temporary one the provider generates when you start rescue mode, usually shown once in the panel or sent by email/ticket. If you never saw one, check your email or ask their support to resend it. Your own root password normally won't work there, because the rescue system is a separate small Linux.

Once you're in, the full /boot fix is usually:
1. lsblk (find your disk partitions)
2. mount /dev/sdXN /mnt (your root partition), and mount the /boot partition on /mnt/boot if it is separate
3. for d in dev proc sys; do mount --bind /$d /mnt/$d; done; chroot /mnt
4. ls /boot, then remove old kernels you don't use (Debian/Ubuntu: apt remove linux-image-OLDVERSION, or apt autoremove --purge)
5. update-initramfs -u -k all and update-grub, then exit, unmount, and reboot normally

Keep the newest kernel that worked, plus one older one as a fallback. Don't hand-delete the files of the kernel you're actually booting.
