Little is more pernicious than the idea you are born with some special talent or intelligence or you are not. For the gifted they risk falling apart when it doesn't come easy because it calls in doubt their entire self-image. For those that don't seem especially gifted it keeps them fromm simply enjoying the area and its challenges because they were convinced early they should even bother.
