In 1826, a bricklayer named William Morgan from Batavia, New York, threatened to publish a book exposing the secret rituals of the Freemasons. Shortly after making this vow, he was abducted and never seen again.
Rumours quickly spread that local Freemasons had murdered him to protect their secrets. When the subsequent kidnapping trials yielded only light misdemeanor convictions, the public suspected that Masonic judges, jurors, and politicians had rigged the justice system to protect their own.
