@manfromhuh let me give you a personal example of how a german thinks: at a business event there was free beer, and I wanted one for my way back into the hotel. I didnt know if it was allowed, but because I know they need that bottle back for the "pfand", or they are missing one bottle for a full beer kasten/box/whatever you call it in english, I brought it back the next day.
