Interesting thread. It seems a lot of people are down on nostr, but I don’t think they should be.
People too closely associate nostr with social media. IMHO, they shouldn’t (and it’s a distraction). Nostr was never going to take over normie social media. Why would it? Nobody switches from an entrenched system unless the new system is 10x better. Network effects and lock in are real. Only the few of us who felt censored would be motivated to move. Also, if we’re being honest about it, I suspect that many of us like it this way: small, focused on our core interests. Like digital agoraphobia maybe.
But nostr is a freedom tech protocol, it’s not a social media system. Pixie is using nostr for decentralized coordination. Nostr is an amazing identity and mailbox system where clients can check to see if someone has sent them a message. Pixie uses that for connecting users, so that they can use E2E encrypted messaging and share their profiles with each other, etc. Of course we also are building a social media client using nostr, but again, nostr is much more than that.
We need to think instead about how to introduce more people to freedom tech with nostr as one of the key protocols. Users care about experiences, not protocols. First principles: who is our target market? What do we offer them?
The key reason pixie is focusing on games and apps is because you should see how kids light up when you show them pixie and ask them what kind of game they want to make. In 15 mins when they have their first game, the high fives, laughs, and jumping around is infectious! Pure joy. Any what do they do next? They want to show their friends. That’s true social and it flows naturally from the experience.
I’m passionate about pixie because I believe we have a real opportunity to make it faster and easier to build apps and games and share them with friends. No install, runs everywhere, apps are easy to share. Nostr is a key part of that and the kids won’t know about the nostr protocol until later when they need to use it in a new app.
The world just changed. It’s never been easier to build new things. I’m incredibly optimistic for nostr and freedom tech because nostr is for builders.
