Perhaps the deeper question is: what are we actually trying to preserve?
Once preservation–as opposed to extraction or an extraction-based economy– comes first, the question becomes one of optionality, infrastructure, and ultimately jurisdiction. Different forms of property (both physical and digital) may serve different parts of that equation.

The form matters less than the principles it "embodies".
