Initially I only got into MD because I needed something for recording masters for my 12" vinyl productions (around 1994) and MD was the next best and way more affordable option to getting a DAT recorder (which would cost 3-5x more). The compression was a potential issue, but I could never hear a difference for my own music and the mastering lab also didn't complain... Quite quickly it became my fave format, and really helped me to organize my sketches and field recordings. Coming from tapes only, the direct random access was absolutely phenomenal to have for your own recordings! Also loved the cute size and colors of the discs — I miss it and really should get a second hand player to create backups of the remaining disks (if they even still work)...
