Today I was wondering about the inefficiency we've built into our everyday computing machinery. After a .NET framework update every Windows machine will run the Native Image Generator, now more commonly known as the .NET Runtime Optimization Service. That is an ahead-of-time compiler that will spend a significant amount of CPU usage to do exactly the same thing on every single machine. Hundreds of millions of Windows installations burning power to do the same thing.

Something that could be avoided by shipping precompiled binaries or just improving the JIT startup time instead, not exactly rocket science.
