The kernel of recent versions of Plan 9 can be compiled during a toilet break and, due to its size, is enormously easy to understand. In my opinion, there is no _technical_ reason why descendants of V7 UNIX, rather than Plan 9, make up the majority of F(L)OSS systems.
The fact that Linux has become bloatware is a problem that receives too little attention. Linux itself receives too much of it. YMMV.
