Someone just suggested to me that Israel is gods chosen people and that I should go read my Bible. I replied by saying gods chosen people wouldn't commit genocide and rape.

Common mistake. Any one who believes in the God of the Bible is Israel. Israel: Not an area or a heredity. Read your Bible carefully or maybe more appropriately have the 'someone' read carefully. Last day deceptions will be plentiful..
