@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... The older US highways are numbered in the opposite direction. US-1 is on the East Coast and US-99 is on the West Coast. US-2 is in the north and US-98 is in the south.
The reason for that was to minimize the region where the same numbers were close together between the US and Interstate highways.
Also note the Interstate highways were USUALLY ending in 5 or 0 - as RK already noted there are exceptions to that rule.
