I'm willing to believe that humans do things for a belief in something higher than them, or I'd have to believe that my own actions are motivated by neurotransmitters telling me that I'm hungry/horny/jealous etc. If I didn't believe that, I'd probably have gotten a compsci degree, taken adderrall, and converted to Judaism by now. But I didn't, because I believe in something higher than myself and I want to see good things come to fruition.
For example, I'm sure there are material and base reasons the Civil War was fought, but I also believe John Brown raided Harper's Fairy because he really believed White people needed to die for the crime of slavery. I don't doubt he was a religious fanatic in his own way, and he was certainly willing to throw his life away for that.
