This is what I see as well.
It’s fair enough if people don’t find value in the music, but it’s definitely a discussion that deserves some attention.
I’m pretty sure most of us would like to see a more decentralized version of the world, but right now, I have to say that Spotify is unfortunately my most reliable source of income tied directly to music streaming. Yes, there are other ways to earn a living, like live shows, merchandise, or even selling hotdogs, but I’m old school and still believe that recorded music has its own value.
We have great potential here to make this space the independent and edgy alternative to Spotify, and a more successful version of Bandcamp. Without a better plan to make it happen, it will be difficult to convince newly onboarded artists not to lose interest after just a few months.
