Ivan Illich has a lot of interesting thoughts along these lines - basically that in the modern world people pay for goods and services which used to be built into community (child care, hospice, food, arts)
Or which didn't used to be necessary at all because of the needs fulfilled by the community or the lifestyle (gym memberships, health insurance, counseling, etc)
