I was never a fan of the levels/rank style associated with them for trust

I was thinking the exact same thing. Back in the day "key signing parties" were meant to create webs of trust based on chains of "I verify this person is has X key"... We're just trying to verify that there's a human here

I thought the same. But I'm all in to revive web of trust.
