Countries need good marketing, nowadays. All of our attention is spread so thin, that you have to actively compete, advertise, and build trust, to get the world to care about what you care about.

I think the USA thought it became so rich and powerful because it was so wonderful, but it became so rich and powerful because _we thought_ it was so wonderful. Now, we think it kinda sucks. We want our money back, we stay away, and we avoid buying their stuff.

What changed? Their marketing changed. Rather than being inspirational and aspirational, it's creepy gazillionaires led by Old Man Yells at Cloud. (But not at The Cloud, just a literal cloud.)

Other countries just seem cooler or more deserving, or have charming and charismatic leaders, so our money is being redirected to there. **The global economy is an attention economy.**

On a completely unrelated topic, the entire planet is frantically trying to _Get Off Oil_, now. If you make yourself an unreliable supplier, you can torture and mock your customers, for a while, but not forever. People eventually just get sick of your shit and replace you.

America, the last time we went there (20 years ago admittedly) was wonderful. You would never find a more friendly and welcoming group of people than you would in small town America.

I kinda disagree. The US is still the freest and most optimistic country. I can't think of a single country that isn't dumber outside the vatican. We don't get dragged to jail for thought crimes like the UK. We didn't foist Cookie Banners on the world like the E.U. or muck up nearly every techolog...
