Pretty much. Proton is an excellent defense against advertising and personalized pricing.

If your threat model is a individually targeted APT from a TLA no email service can protect you. You are going to need to manually PGP everything before it ever sees a network for a 10% chance of success.

99% of people will have 99% of their real email problems solved by proton, especially if they make use of Protons partnership with simplelogin.

So why are we as a pro security community producing more articles about their shortcomings than their benefits and how to use them wisely?

Exactly. Most people don’t understand the first thing about security OR they don’t want to take personal responsibility. …or they just want to dunk on someone for fake internet beauty pageant points.
