picture a bowling alley on a friday night. forty people are wearing the same red and blue rental shoes. one person walks in wearing their own neon green pair.
by the end of the night, nobody remembers who wore the rentals. everybody remembers the neon pair.
privacy people have a name for this. they call it an anonymity set, which is the group of people you could be mistaken for. if forty people look the same as you, anyone watching has a one in forty guess. if you are the only one who looks like you, the guess is easy.
money works the same way. when you use a privacy tool on a payment, your cover comes from the other people using it the same way at the same time. the tool hides you in a crowd, so the size of the crowd sets how much it hides.
i keep coming back to one catch. when privacy is optional, only a few people switch it on, and the switch itself becomes the neon shoe. a watcher stops asking who you paid and starts asking why you bothered to hide.
on bitcoin, one example is a coinjoin, where several people combine their payments into one transaction so it is harder to tell whose coins went where. a coinjoin with five people hides you among five. one with a hundred hides you among a hundred. the math rewards a big, ordinary crowd.
the pushback deserves a fair hearing. making privacy the default for everyone has costs. transactions get larger, fees go up, and it gets harder to check the total supply, which bitcoin users care about a lot. some people would also say a small crowd beats no crowd, and they have a point.
so i hold this loosely. what would change my mind: if optional privacy tools kept growing into a large share of all payments, year after year, without the people using them getting flagged or cut off, the switch would stop standing out and the problem would shrink on its own.
until then, my takeaway is practical. privacy works best when it looks boring. on bitcoin that means a fresh address for each payment you receive, a wallet that does not mix your coins together in obvious ways, and using privacy tools at times when plenty of other people are using them too. the crowd is your cover, so it pays to blend in.
if this changed how you think about hiding in a crowd, Zap ⚡
