EGGS BEAT A TOP WHOLE FOODS PROTEIN BAR ON USABLE PROTEIN PER DOLLAR.
Protein maxxing is popular, so companies put protein in everything, even junk food. The questions are what that protein costs and how much your body can actually use. DIAAS is a score for how much of a food's protein your body can use. Above 100 means high quality. Take grams of protein per dollar, multiply by DIAAS, and the bigger number is the better buy.
I checked Great Value large eggs at Walmart against Perfect Bar Peanut Butter, one of the top protein bars at Whole Foods.
Eggs: $1.67 a dozen. About 45 grams of protein per dollar. Cooked egg DIAAS 135. That is about 61 grams per dollar of protein your body can use. Under 1 gram of carbs per egg.
Perfect Bar Peanut Butter: $3.39 for one 2.5 oz bar. 17 grams of protein. 26 grams of carbs. About 5 grams of protein per dollar. The finished bar has no published DIAAS. First ingredient is peanut butter. Roasted peanut DIAAS is 0.43. Using that as an estimate: about 2 grams per dollar of protein your body can use. That is about 28 times less.
If you want more protein, skip the protein bar and buy a carton of eggs.
