I commonly hear that cashiers hate it when shoppers make the joke "Oh it won't scan? Must be free." This makes sense but it also seems non-obvious from the customer perspective - it's not malicious and there's no way to know what jokes someone else hears too many times without being told. So maybe we should talk about this

What jokes do you, dear reader, hear too many times? What are some well-intentioned things people say to you that have the unintended effect of wearing you down?

I exclusively use self-checkout. At places where it's not available, cashiers usually don't really speak English, so any joke will cause confusion and undue suffering for everyone involved.
