Today I learned that our national postal services are effectively subsidising deliveries from Chinese marketplaces. According to the 1969 Universal Postal Union Convention, delivery fees for incoming international mail are nominal. The system worked when the flow of mail was roughly balanced.

Now, with billions of packages coming from China, it’s a major money-loser, and since national postal services operate at a loss, European taxpayers are effectively subsidizing Chinese production.
