The tribe of Judah, the Jews, succeeded the twelve tribes of the Hebrew people, and Jesus Christ fulfilled their law and brought in the New Covenant, where He and His followers (the people of the way, later Christians) succeeded them.
The "religion" has always been for the true people of the God of Israel. When Jesus came, died, was resurrected, and ascended, the Kingdom expanded beyond the Jews to the Gentiles, such that the children of Abraham became all those who forsook the world and followed the Christ.
It was at that time that those still remaining in the Rabbinic/Talmudic world of the Jews forked off the longest, true chain of redemption.
