The whole idea of Bitcoin is ideologically motivated. So if the miners pretend its all about fees for them then they are simply lying. Bitcoin has attracted some of the smartest and most clued up people on the planet. Any claims they may make of not understanding the ideological motives are just a fascade at best.

Maybe, you're not replying to the main argument put forth in my note though: do you agree that changing consensus on Bitcoin requires hashpower and that without it nodes cannot do much?
