I don't think it is controversial at all to say that the economic sanctions post WWI caused the Weimar hyperinflation. Of course Hitler's rise to power was heavily fueled by the inflation.

The question I haven't looked into is who had the bright idea to make Germany pay everyone back after WWI and what were they thinking?

I recently read The Black March. It's the diary of a young german man who joined the SS right before the start of the war. He and average man on the street blamed France.
