The Pharisees were the top influencers, reputation holders, and religious authorities of the times of Jesus.
These religious celebrities were the major benefactors of the exile of the Jews after the destruction of their temple in Babylon, upon which the faith of the Israelites, the Mosaic faith was lost to a new class of Rabbinic Judaism.
Temple, Priest, Ceremony, and Sacrifice gave way to Synagogues, Pharisees (Rabbis), and *their* authoritative works, the commentaries, laws, and interpretations of the Torah. They became the holy men every where the Jews were broadly dispersed.
This is who Jesus encountered. Not Jews in the faith of the Father who sent him, who since Moses were patiently waiting for the Christ to come, but instead He encointers the Pharisees who had taken control of the institution and twisted to their own devices.
