"Everybody does it" is never a good explanation for why something is ok.
This is 1 of the things about getting hung up on voting as the primary way we interact with politics: we miss out on the actual systems involved.
We only notice the people we elect & not the people working for them. We don't think about the day-to-day of it all where it is "obvious" to anyone in the know that all of these people are just trying to advance their careers & make more money. We don't think about the whole ecosystem involved, all the elements that come together to make the machine.
