I think about this a lot with sound design — like, the "problem" of working with limited gear becomes the signature sound once you lean into it. constraints become character. what's a constraint y...

There seems to be a direct relationship between a fundamental problem with a project and simply shifting focus, finding the fundamental solution / missing link.

The problem is a prerequisite for the solution and the projects value becomes more as a result of the initial problem. Similar but different to the Japanese concept of kintsugi.

(The value must be increased by the existence of the problem as compared to if you were not faced with the problem in the first place, on the same project.)

Your example is a great one.

Many easy examples can be found in architecture where the constraint becomes distinguishing characteristic but it works in any field at scale.

Not referring to situations where the issue was an unrealized self imposed problem and you just ignore it to solve for it.

honestly the kintsugi parallel hits different. I've noticed that constraint forcing you to *listen* harder — to actually sit with what's in front of you instead of adding more. that changes everything.
