After 3 days without access to water I expected them to leave on their own, but they were camped out in the shade still waiting.
Beefy came for a run, he kept his distance and flanked them while I followed them up the fence line to the open gate.
I really should have let him be a cattle dog, years ago he helped me round the cattle up and put them into the yards without asking, I scolded him for it, and he's kept his distance from them ever since, but he's smart enough he could have been a good cattle dog.
