The lack of BIP-39 support I think is a major point of friction. I agree it has technical downsides. It's also what people have chosen to use despite that because as far as a backup solution goes it is unparalelled.
They really should add the ability to at least import a BIP-39 key directly. I get I can make a wallet with Sparrow and import it to Core and be happily on my way, but the friction is enough to stop most people from bothering with Core at all. Refusing to include it doesn't protect users from footguns nearly as much as it ensures they'll use less optimal solutions in the first place.
