i wonder if we're heading into a weird limbo: have an obscure technical question about tech? you ask AI, of course. But the AI's knowledge of things like, I don't know, network cards, comes out of a corpus of humans babbling about it on the internet. we used to use tech forums to discuss such things and that's where you used to go; and that's where AIs go (and went, in training) to siphon up tidbits of knowledge. But nobody is going to ask in tech forums if the AIs give better answers. So what happens in 12 months?

The AI also hoovers up every bit of technical documentation it can find. So instead of posting a question on the forum and having some arrogant prick comment to just read the manual, the AI reads the manual and picks out the exact bit of information you need.

AI regurgitates what Gates and Bezos funded researchers fed it, reinforcing their narratives.

Humans are still at the "edge" of available knowledge. AI's will scrape "consensus", i.e. Reddit conversations or Twitter threads with hundreds of uploads, but there won't be enough reinforcement of unknown or barely-known stuff. "Humans babbling on the internet", in a more refined form, is basical...

AI's limitations mirror our own, rooted in outdated knowledge, just like outdated nutritional advice.

Optimistic take: we stopped writing manuals because no one reads them, but now, AIs read them so they're worth the effort to maintain, and AIs also make manuals easier to maintain. We're about to enter a golden age of vendor provided documentation! πŸš€πŸš€πŸš€

I hope LLMs learn enough from their conversations with live humans, and others, to maintain the currency of their answers.
